So, I just finished reading A Place on Earth by Wendell Berry. The genre is realistic fiction, and if that's your favorite genre, you will probably love this book. I was familiar with Wendell Berry's poetry before (highly recommend), but this is the first novel by him that I have read. It was given to my by my grandpa, so it immediately rose to the top of my must-read list. It was a decently long read. The paperback copy is 321 pages. Honestly, this might be the best example out of any book I have read for describing everyday scenes in such incredible, captivating detail that the reader feels they have been transported to the scene. This book is a snapshot of life in a small town in the 1940s (yes, it does incorporate the effects of WWII for you history buffs). If you start reading, and it seems a bit slow-going, give it a chance because I guarantee you will get hooked on the characters and the stories of their lives. There are some really shocking and riveting moments that can even bring you to tears (if you get so emotionally invested that you cry when reading like I do). When I finished this book, I immediately wanted to read another book by Wendell Berry, so that speaks for itself. The one thing about this book is that it is part of the Port William series (the name of the town where it takes place). This is not the first book that Berry wrote in the series, and the books do not need to be read in a definitive order, but if you are interested in reading the series and wonder which book to start with, a quick google search comes up with several options of the best order by people who have read the full series. If I end up reading them all someday, I'll be glad to let you know my recommendations also. If you've read it, let me know what your thought were! Do you agree? Do you disagree?
